Region I Championships UPDATE

OFFICIAL UPDATE ON US YOUTH SOCCER REGION I CHAMPIONSHIPS (6/27/16):

US Youth Soccer Region I and the West Virginia Soccer Association understand there are many concerns in regard to the recent disaster that has hit West Virginia. With the pictures and videos posted on social media and the national news, we understand the concern.

However, we want to assure everyone of the following:

1) The major disaster areas are located in the Clendenin/Elkview area (20 minutes north of Charleston and 80 minutes from competition venues) and Greenbrier County area (approximately 3 hours southeast from competition venues). There is no danger to those coming from Region I to the area as all major highways in the state are in great shape.

2) The entire state of West Virginia is coming together to help those in need during this time. Numerous charity drives are happening across the state as we collect cleaning supplies, bottled water, clothing, and other essentials. Most people that come to the Region I Championships say West Virginians are very friendly and helpful. You should see us when a disaster occurs and we come together as one.....neighbor helping neighbor.

The rivers and creeks have crested and the levels are dropping, so the need for concern has passed. However, US Youth Soccer Region I and West Virginia Soccer Association continue to monitor the situation for any change in status.

While the hotels and the soccer fields were essentially spared, the recent historic weather did impact West Virginia Soccer Association's volunteer base. Some volunteers are faced with property damage and power outages.

With this in mind, we are asking for volunteers from around Region I to help with staffing just one 3 to 4 hour shift during Region I Championships in Barboursville. This way, we can make sure that those impacted can properly focus on taking care of their families and dealing with their damaged homes.

Volunteers should be 16 years old or older; however, ball people may be younger. To volunteer for a shift, please visit the following link to sign up: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090b4ba95-wvsoccer.
